Your Vanishing Shadow

Your Vanishing Shadow
Some nights arrive quietly, yet leave behind questions louder than any human voice. In the fading footprints and the figure that never returned, I found something that made my heart race, as though an answer were waiting to be uncovered.

Dusk settled slowly that day, almost as if it were giving me time to realise something was wrong.

I stood in the narrow lane where you always appeared, with your unhurried steps and that faint smile that never seemed to change.

Usually, I'd spot you within five minutes.

But that evening… nothing.

The lane looked as though it had never known you.

I waited. From the last orange glow until every trace of colour disappeared into dusk.

But you never came.

The worry I always pushed aside began creeping in, like water finding its way through a crack.

By the time night fell, my phone was still silent.

You hadn't sent that strange little message you always did.

“I'm still alive.”

This kind of silence… wasn't like you.

I followed the tracks.

The sandy ground held your footprints clearly. I knew the way you walked too well. You always moved faster when your head was crowded with thoughts, as though your feet were trying to keep up with your mind.

The trail continued for a while, then suddenly stopped at the edge of a small river.

No sign that you'd turned back.

Nothing.

It was as though the footprints had vanished with you.

I sat on a large rock.

The night wind wrapped itself around me, but it was the kind of embrace that only made my chest feel heavier. Your name kept circling in my head, and somehow, making everything worse, my longing had started humming quietly inside me.

I muttered under my breath.

“It would be nice if you could shut up for two minutes…”

That was when I noticed something across the river.

A tiny light flashed three times.

Stopped.

Then started again.

For a few seconds, I thought it came from a house.

Maybe a motorbike.

But the longer I stared, the more I realised it was something else.

One thought crossed my mind.

“If that's someone burning rubbish, I swear I'm going straight home.”

Then I looked properly and nearly covered my face.

It was one of those cheap gadgets from Temu.

The kind advertised as a compass, power bank, torch, GPS, bottle opener, mini drone and probably twelve other things, but when it finally arrives, all it actually does is blink and make a faint noise like a mosquito.

I drew a long breath.

“If you're going to leave me a clue, couldn't you at least choose something that doesn't make me feel like an idiot?”

Ridiculous as the gadget looked, something about the way it had been placed made me uneasy.

It was hanging from a branch, tilted towards one particular direction.

As though you'd deliberately left it there.

I followed where it pointed.

Every step made me more nervous, yet somehow I still had enough energy to complain in my head.

“If this is some Temu marketing trick to make me buy the upgraded version, I swear I'm blocking them.”

When I reached the opposite bank, my heart nearly dropped out of my chest.

Your jacket.

That worn jacket you refused to leave behind even when the weather was hot enough to cook a person alive.

It hung neatly from a branch.

Not wet.

Not dirty.

As though someone had only just placed it there.

Beneath it was a small note.

Your handwriting.

Neat, but hurried.

“I haven't disappeared. I left before you could see me because I didn't want you to follow. There's something I need to settle. If you come looking for me now, you won't find anything. But if you're patient… I'll come and find you myself.”

I read it slowly.

The second time, I smiled a little.

By the third, I was starting to get annoyed.

I grumbled to myself.

“If you're going to leave clues, at least leave the WiFi password or something… not a whole thriller scene with a broken Temu gadget.”

But I knew you.

You hadn't disappeared because you wanted me to forget you.

You disappeared because you knew I'd chase after you without thinking twice.

The wind stirred your jacket gently.

And for a moment, I could have sworn someone was watching me from a distance.

I turned.

Nothing.

Only the river, the wind, and the night keeping its secrets.

I folded the note and slipped it into my pocket.

The longing in my chest finally stopped singing for a while.

Maybe it was tired after putting on a whole concert.

Your shadow had disappeared from my sight, but never from my memory.

And although you'd gone somewhere I couldn't follow, somehow I knew that one day you'd return.

Carrying the story that had vanished with the dusk.

I walked home slowly.

Your note in my pocket.

And in my heart, a longing that was no longer singing.

Now it was only whispering softly.

“Wait.”
